This paper considers the use of finite element based methods for the solution of problems involving the scattering of electromagnetic waves by perfectly conducting obstacles. An explicit approach in the time domain is implemented on a general unstructured triangular grid, with the electric and magnetic fields approximated in a continuous piecewise linear fashion. A second approach involves simulation in the frequency domain using higher order quadrilateral edge elements. The numerical performance of the two approaches is demonstrated and an assessment made of their applicability to the solution of 3D high frequency problems of interest to the aerospace industry.
